I thought it looked rugged, but I had no idea just how rugged it truly was until I took up SCUBA diving. It survived life banging around boats for weeks on end as I literally traveled around the world. I wore it on hundreds of SCUBA dives up to 140 feet below the surface. Whether getting me get back to the surface before my air ran out or getting me to a sidewalk cafe before a blind date ran out this watch was always there for me. My Casio G-Shock never stopped running, it never leaked and never it let me down. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

The beauty of this watch is that it is as utilitarian as a hammer and just as indestructible. I bought one for myself and another for my father as a gift. Mine has been covered in paint, gone diving in salt water, and gone skiing and camping in tough conditions. It is routinely used while I run and ends up dripping in sweat. Over nearly 1.5 years of this activity level and there is not even a mark on the plastic band. My dad is finding out the same thing after destroying his past two watches due to inadvertent impacts or water intrusion. I have owned a couple of Timex Ironman models and this watch is much more robustly constructed. Very simple and easy to read interface, controls are intuitive. You can throw the instructions away. The Amazon price is great, as well, compared to other websites or retail outlets near me (Chicagoland area).

This watch is not cool, it is not fancy, and it has zero “bling”. I don’t know if that makes me like it even more. I am a watch collector, and have a number of very nice swiss timepieces in my collection. However, the Casio ends up being on my wrist more than any of my other watches, even for work functions or places where I am typically dressed up. I think the Casio is so anti-fashion that it actually makes a fashion statement.

Saw @ target during a roadtrip and bought it @ amazon when I got home. Quality is fair, not as heavy as I thought. The light in it is also pretty weak, unlike the stock pictures.
“Exactly as expected; even better than expected.” 2010-07-24
By John A.

My search began with a broken watch band. Two different watches actually; on right after the other in a 2 week span. They we both cheap digitals, but they had made me somewhat used to having the digital time on hand again. The dilemma therein was I wasn’t interested in loosing a watch a week nor buying on a week for that matter, and simultaneously believe a digital watch isn’t worth very much in my book especially in comparison to an analogue or combo.

So I began searching brick and mortar stores for a week to no avail. It dawned on me that Amazon would be my best option (especially since the student amazon prime promo just started). After googling the best digital watches that were cheap as well, the general consensus was that Casio was the ideal choice save a problem with the bands being able to break after after a year or two (better than a week anyway). During my search I saw that there were several Casio watches with metal band (for durability), but then I saw this watch which is notable because 1) its a metal band, and more importantly 2) it wasn’t those “elasticky”/stretchy metal bands, but rather a regular metal band. The choice was clear.

Having just gotten the watch I am not disappointed. Its exactly the quality I expected from what I payed and the reviews I read. However I saw some reviews that I simply disagree with:

-The metal looks tacky: While I’ll admit its quite thin, its not bad. The band is a brushed look. The housing may look a little “eh” because its chrome, but that is made up by the large display minimizing its appearance.

-The watch is too small, and seems to be made for a woman, not a man: I’m not sure what type of sausage wrists you have, but this is about on par with any digital watch I’ve seen. It doesn’t seem particularly small at all; thin yes, small no.

I also have a few of my own notes to share:

- While not rocket science, the setting of functions on this watch isn’t as intuitive as other digitals I’ve used.

- If anything is tacky, it would be the lens on the housing, albeit it is classic Casio.

- The clasp is strange. To me anyway; any metal banded watch I’ve owned has had an enclosed clasp. Also the instructions were generic, so they did not tell you how to adjust it. Again its not rocket science, but it also wasn’t intuitive. Its also sometimes difficult to get closed in my opinion.

“Great!” 2010-06-03
By T. Patterson (SAN DIEGO, CA, US)

I bought this and two other Casios for a friend’s birthday. He likes them all very much and is pleased with the styles and variety. I’m happy with the price as well. Great value.

“Got this watch by mistake! Mine is astoundingly accurate.” 2010-06-01
By R. D. Archer

I like this watch. Ever since I started carrying a cellphone, I fell out of the habit of wearing a wristwatch.

Recently, I have had to do a lot of flying and decided that the convenience of instant access to time (especially in-flight) was well worth the purchase price of an inexpensive watch.

I bought the watch at [large electronic retailer named after potato strips cooked in oil], thinking I was getting a different model. When I opened it at home, an unexpected wave of deja-vu hit as this watch is nearly identical to a Casio I wore many years ago, and the watch I got home wasn’t on display at all. I didn’t bother returning it, since pretty much any watch would suffice.

The band isn’t uncomfortable, and it’s metal or metal-looking, which means the watch doesn’t look too much like something that came free out of a cereal box.

The display is sharp and easy to read in direct sun and under indoor lighting. The blue backlight is excellent and works great even in darkness. It has time, date, day of week, an alarm (which is too soft to wake a mouse, but could be useful as a reminder during the day), and a stopwatch. This is pretty much everything I demand of a wrist-mounted timepiece. As others have noted, one drawback is you cannot easily set the time in the dark, because the backlight function pre-empts the setting feature, so you can’t see what you’re doing without external light. Annoying, but doubtful it is a problem unless you’re into cloak-and-dagger ops where you have to synchronize watches in the dead of night and oddly forgot a flashlight.

The timekeeping on my unit is startlingly accurate.

A week ago, I set it to time dot gov. The watch ever-so-slightly lagged the NIST clock when I set it, and after a week, it still lags by the same ever-so-slight amount (perhaps 0.1 seconds, certainly no more than 1/4 second). After 7 days, I still cannot tell if it is gaining or losing time! This is unusual in my experience; most watches I’ve owned gained or lost about a half second per day.

No idea if Casio firmware calibrates these watches at manufacture to compensate in for the normal component variations in the crystal oscillator and associated circuitry, or if I just got very lucky and got one that just happens to be spot-on, frequency-wise. At such a low price, I’m thinking maybe it’s just luck. So my experience may not reflect the experience of others with accuracy.

The biggest (and basically only) drawback I see is looks. As jewelry or a dress watch, it doesn’t work. I think a step up to a Citizen eco-drive or Seiko or Pulsar or Bulova in the $30-$90 range is well worth the money where appearance is a major consideration (and some of these watches are still a good value), but for a practical watch it’s an unbeatable buy. Figure the day something breaks a year or two down the road, you can feel smart that you got so much value out of a $15 investment when many people spend more than that on a new band or battery change at the jewelers’.

Happiness is unceremoniously dumping the carcass of your dead watch in the trash and ordering a new one online from Amazon. Beats shedding tears for an expensive watch you’ve become emotionally attached to, or driving around and then paying for an expensive repair.

“Wow, I can not believe someone sells a watch like this for under $15″ 2010-03-25
By D. Golden (Sprinfield, MO USA)

Simply the best $15 watch I have ever seen.

This watch is more than double this price in the retail stores.

I had one of these before and paid $40 for it.

Don’t buy it, because you don’t deserve a deal this good and

Because at this price it’s called stealing.

“Best functional watch available” 2010-07-28
By Gary Ferrebee

This is a great watch for the money. Yes, you can’t look cool wearing it – its very basic all black plastic styling screams “NERD”. But i have yet to see a watch with as much functionality at any price. Not only multi-function stopwatch, alarm, multiple time zones, 50 meter water protection, but an extremely useful repeating countdown timer that I can’t find in any other design – nothing like it for timing stretches or checking walking/running pace, or timing active/rest times for lifting. Once you own this watch, you won’t ever want to be without it. This is my third one – one died after about 10 years, the second had the support bracket for the band break after about 5 years – not bad for a $20.00 watch that was continually in use. After checking Walmart and Target I assumed it was not longer being made and bought another Casio model. A decent watch but with much less functionality. Finding that this one was still available from Amazon was like Christmas in July! Can’t wait for it to arrive.

If you are image conscious, you may need a ‘dress watch’ as well (it certainly is not a fashion statement), but as a practical extremely useful everyday watch is has no peer.

“My second one!” 2010-07-24
By Richard T. Nicolls (Seattle)

This is my second purchase of this exact same model Casio Men’s W71-1V Classic Digital Watch. I wore my first one constantly for over 15 years and it was still working fine, except the strap pin hole broke out on one side and a band could no longer be attached. I like this watch as it has a smaller footprint and is thinner than most digital watches while still performing all of the functions expected of a digital watch. A real bargain.

“The Casio W71-1V is great for running” 2010-07-16
By Edward Edmonds

As a competitive runner, I find Casio W71-1V to be a very simple yet functional device for such an inexpensive price. This model has all a runner really needs: a thin profile, a countdown timer, and a standard stop-watch.

The countdown timer is programmable from 1 second to 24 hours and will reset or reset and restart depending on your preference.

The stop-watch is accurate to 1/100th of a second and operates typically.

The profile of the Casio W71-1V is 8.0mm — thinner than other Casio watches with half the feature set.

5 stars.

If you are looking for something just as inexpensive, the Casio F201WA-1A is another alternative. It adds 5 alarms to the feature-set but has larger dimensions and a thicker profile. Interestingly it weighs less than the W71-1V.

I was worried that the G-Shock would be way too big for his child-size wrists, but not a problem at all! The watch fits perfectly and he loves it.
“Classic” 2010-07-15
By shutterbug

I remember when I bought my first Casio watch back in college which was around 1973. Cost was around $50, no kidding for a plastic watch with a funny digital screen. Fast forward 30 years and I am finding myself buying almost an identical watch with some minor mechanical and cosmetic improvements for $13. It just doesn’t get any better. Hope they continue making these watches. They are affordable, keep incredibly accurate time and weight almost nothing. I now find myself returning to a simpler time in my life with this incredible watch. For now, my Invicta, Timex, G Shock and other oversize timpieces can be placed in storage and worn on a special occassions. Big is not necessarily beautiful and practical.

“great running watch” 2010-06-25
By Glenn Mccarthy (Lakewood, CO, USA)

I have had multiple versions of this watch. Never sorry to buy another. Easy to use, great price.

“Thin and lightweight watch” 2009-11-17
By Mr. Mango

I’m happy with this watch. I had the same model years ago when I was a kid. It is practical and comfortable. According to Casio it is only 8mm thick and only weighs 14 grams. It also has 50m water resistance which is higher than just “water resistant” models. I don’t see why the F91W-1 model has a higher listed water resistance than the 59-1v model in the Amazon description.

My only complaint is that the light button should be on the lower right side of the watch like on the classic G-shock model for ease of use. Also, full illumination would be nice but this is the classic model and thus has the classic microlight. Regardless, Casio makes digital watches that are hard to beat on value and performance.

“OK for the price; needs better button arrangement” 2009-10-26
By Paul French (Monrovia, CA USA)

This watch was only about $13 shipped, so I’m not going to complain that much. It tells time, and that’s what it is supposed to do. The buttons however need to be in a different place. I have to reach all the way over to the left top button to turn on the light to see the time in the dark. That is already a hassle when holding something in my right hand (I wear the watch on my left wrist), but to top it off, you need to hold down the button to keep the light on. Maybe I’m spoiled, but that seems ridiculous. I have had plenty of watches by Casio and all of them kept the light on for a few seconds when you pressed the light button. There aren’t any fancy modes on this watch, like stopwatch or timer. The only modes are Time, Alarm, and Set Time. There isn’t even a dedicated button for adjusting the time; you have to hit the mode button until the seconds start flashing. This watch is fine for someone who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money and only wants to tell time, but the light should at least stay on for a few seconds.

“3rd one purchased” 2009-09-11
By Clare Barrow (Aruba)

This is the 3rd one of these watches my husband has bought over a period of around 8 years. Cheap and cheerful – not worth the cost of a new battery so we just replace it each time. Overall a great watch for the money.

“Excellent Digital Watch!” 2010-06-20
By Raoolio (Guatemala)

I bought this as a present for my wife, she just loved it the minute she saw it, I have always trusted Timex watches since I got one as a present 12 years ago, it feels really high quality, and it just works as it is supposed to, highly recommend it!

“Great Product” 2010-03-21
By ionyka (Atlanta, GA)

I had a Timex Expedition watch for many years, and finally it bit the dust (like other reviews I would not recommend getting it really wet as that is what happened to my old watch). I ordered this one because I liked the band option instead of the typical velcro strap. I like it a lot! I have a small wrist so I have to use the smallest setting so if you have really small wrists you might want to note that it does not go extremely small. Works just like my other Timex, all the same settings so it is easy to get used to, I like the glow feature better as it lights up the digits instead of the background behind them.

“Best Expedition yet!” 2010-02-15
By Sharon E. Reihart (Alexandria, PA United States)

This watch is probably the 5th Expedition that I’ve bought and by far the best one yet. The previous watches had a green tinted dial that was harder to read than this newer gray colored dial. The watch is also much easier to read at night with the light feature because the entire dial shows up and not just a side-light like the previous. The fit is also much better over the previous watch because it doesn’t stick up off your arm as much and therefore doesn’t get bumped and scratched as easily. The crystal is recessed from the edge, also preventing the crystal from becoming scratched as easily. Timex is doing a great job at improving these watches. Last but not least is that these watches keep PERFECT time! I would recommend this watch to anyone.

“Casio ‘disposable’ watch” 2010-05-09
By Michael Echols (Ft. Myers, Florida)

I buy a new Casio about once a year. I wear it fishing, out to eat and to the movies, swimming, flying, boating, sleeping, diving, bathing, and working in the yard…well, you get the idea. Non-stop. It always works perfect and I’ve bought the same kind for years. I do not wear my Rolex Mariner anymore because it never kept correct time anyway. The Casio is always correct and never leaks.

“Not a head turner, just a good old classic cass” 2010-04-07
By Jonathan Selkirk (Darwin, NT, Australia)

If your looking for an inexpensive digital watch that has all the features like dual time, alarm with snooze,

stopwatch, water resistance, long life battery (10 yrs) and a band that won’t die on you then this is a great buy.

The alarm has a good feature in that you can set the day or day/month for the alarm to go off.

Sure enough there is no countdown timer on this model, but at the end of the day it does what it is designed to do -

tell the time, and accurately.

Another excellent feature of this watch is that when your setting the alarm, the current time is displayed as well, and also when in stopwatch mode and of course when it’s on dual time.

One thing I like about the watch itself is that the face features the day in three letters, the year in full, day and month, and the digital time display is set in large numbers.

It’s made in China, but don’t let this put you off, mine hasn’t missed a beat and I’m sure its made to strict Casio specs.

Cons: The plastic face will scratch easily if treated carelessly. However, one cannot avaiod the occasional bump

against a wall or something. But this watch wont set you back alot of cash anyway.

Besides my Swiss made Swatch, I find Casios to keep better time than much more expensive watches, like my Citizen Windsurfer Protek, or my Rolex Daytona.

“Everything I expected” 2009-09-23
By Nicholas C. Apostol (Washington, DC, USA)

This is a nice watch with more features than I need. I use it for sports training because the digits are very easy to read at a quick glance. I have not used the alarm or other features and doubt I will. I do like the date and day of the week features. I also bought an analog dial watch for more formal occasions. The price was right for both watches. I don’t buy expensive watches so these fit the bill for features and price.

“It does the job it’s advertised to do.” 2009-09-03
By John M. Strubhart (Austin, TX)

I got tired of paying $25 to $30 for digital watches that have both the battery and the band go out at the same time, necessitating a $15 expenditure on the watch, so I got this one. It fits well, and keeps good time and it’s not bulky and in the way. To prevent scratching, I cut a fitted piece of PDA plastic cover to put over the face. It self-adheres and is easy enough to remove and replace when it gets scratched. If you cut it right, you can’t even tell that it’s there. Why Casio doesn’t make replaceable covers to begin with, I’ll never know, because you know what? They’ll never tell me, even if I ask nicely.

I have had this watch since last February and now the sound is gone. The watch does not do much for me if I can’t use the alarm. This is the second Timex watch that has lost its sound. I wear my watch all day and night- everything else works except – no beeps. I am quite disappointed! I suppose I will need to look for something other than Timex. Hope I can make use of the 1 year warranty.

Campbell (Portland OR)

I purchased the G-Shock as a gift for my son who is a big believer in punctuality. The watch is accurate to 5 seconds a month in my experience. He set his to my Casio Pathfinder which syncs with the Atomic Clock and was one second off after 3 weeks. I think that speaks to the accuracy.A good watch especially for the money.

“Not a “Classic” G-Shock” 2010-04-28
By Aaron Frank

I’ve been a fan of G-Shocks for years. I’ve worn them and given them as gifts and loved them for their rugged durability and their utility. I’ve been wearing a fancy watch for the last seven years but when the post holding on the strap popped out I finally decided to go back to a G-Shock. I decided to treat myself and order a new one.

I was originally going to go for the $34 one but it had a bunch of bad reviews so I opted for the DW6900. It certainly isn’t “classic”.

First, it feels cheap and flimsy. Time will tell how it holds up. But my previous two G-Shocks definitely felt sturdier. I even ran over one with an Isuzu Trooper and it still kept going without missing a beat. I don’t think this one would pass that test.

Also when adjusting the time I can only advance the time and roll it back. It’s a inconvience and the old G-Shocks used to be able to do this and for less money than this one.

I hope this at leasts last a while.

“The perfect balance between cost, function, and durability.” 2010-04-28
By Omalika S. Lipp (Camp Pendleton, CA USA)

This is an excellent watch. I can tell you that quite a few servicemembers choose G-shocks, especially this one, as their watch for deployment. I took this very model to Iraq and then Afghanistan (with a trip to Hawaii in between) and it performed flawlessly.

PROS:

Comfortable, durable band – plastic is surprisingly sturdy

Alarm loud enough to wake me up

Easy to find light button

Has all the necessary functions – without the flashy stuff you know you’ll never need anyways

Crystal face is shielded by the casing – very scratch resistant material and shielding protects it well

Very waterproof. I’ve had it down to 50ft underwater, and I wear it regularly in the shower – never any fog or condensation inside

For how long I’ve had it (almost 2 years now), the casing and the band have no scratching, cracking, or visible wear and tear – and trust me, I have been rough with it.

CONS:

The only thing is the “ADJUST” button. I wish it wern’t recessed into the casing so that I could adjust the alarm easier, but this is a personal preference rather than a design/manufacturing flaw.

Again, I highly recommend this watch. It sits at the perfect line between cost and durability. It’s not so expensive that I’d be afraid to put it to the test, yet the quality and durability is far superior to watches that cost far more.

“Built like a tank” 2010-04-09
By Nate N. (St. Louis Metro area, USA)

I received my DW6900 and am very, very pleased. It is solid as a rock and built like a tank. It is a very durable and highly wearable watch. I had considered buying the GW69000 but went with the more economical version and am not disappointed.

“complexity comes for free, simplicity one has to work for” 2010-07-30
By Bibigon (Mountain View, CA)

This is the perfect watch:

1. All information (time,date, day of week) fits on one screen; no need to push any buttons;

2. There are two buttons for setup, but they are flush, so they do not tear and wear the cuffs;

3. Very light;

4. Battery lasts several years;

5. Some of the commenters claims that to change the battery the watch needs to be taken to a repair shop. Nonsense, anyone who can handle a sharp screw driver or a knife can easily open the cover and replace the battery.

6. Allows both 12 and 24hour display;

Over the span of 10 years, this is my second F-28W (I lost the previous one). Love it! If this one is lost, I will do my best to find and buy another F-28W. I hope Casio keeps making these!

“Perfect for me.” 2010-07-25
By doug23

I own this very simple Casio and also the similar one with more features: alarm, stopwatch, timer, and second time. For daily use, this is my go-to watch. I wear watches on the inside of my right wrist. A flex of the wrist can sometimes depress the mode button on the feature-filled watch changing real time to alarm set time. With this more simple watch, there is no mode button, so inadvertent mode changes never occur. And it is very thin so it never gets caught on anything.

After about 2 years, the wrist band for this watch split transversely at the size hole that I use. Even if the band were easy to change (it’s not), and even if I could find the replacement band (I could not), the replacement band would cost almost as much as a whole new watch. So for less than $20, I got a new watch. $10 per year for dependable time and day/date? That for me is the perfect watch.

How can they do that . I cried at the price of battery when replace it ,cost about same as watch did .the screen got scratch and wear . buffed with toothpaste and put scotch tape on it so can see screen now .My watch may be closer to 20 years .but it wasn’t made in china .
